A Gourmet Trip Along The US Gulf Coast
If you wish to take a culinary trip to experience the Southern cuisine, there are certain destinations that every foodie needs to uncover. If you are embarking on such a trip be ready to try different dishes that will leave you craving for more. It would also introduce you to certain essential dishes of the Southern style cuisine such as po’boy, shrimp-based dishes or the sticky jambalaya.
In such a road trip, you need to make New Orleans your most important destination. This city or region in Louisiana has several distinct cuisines that you need to discover, Creole and Cajun are being two of them. There are several classic eateries that you must visit here such as the Commander’s Palace, where the Jazz brunch during weekends is well known. Breakfast can comprise of large varieties of items such as jambalaya or sweet beignet. You can also visit Elizabeth’s where you will find Bananas Foster Stuffed French Toast or you could opt for eggs and fried chicken livers as well. Beignets can also be part of your breakfast which can be varied, such as stuffed with crab meat for instance. Other meals of the day can comprise of seafood varieties like oysters, roux, red beans, and rice or pork-based dishes. Your next stop can be Gulfport which is close to New Orleans. This beach town has several offerings of coastal cuisine where you can try dishes made out of fresh catches of oysters, catfish, and shrimps along with fried dill pickles, green tomatoes or po’boy sandwiches.
Your next stop could be Biloxi. This city by the Mississippi River also has seafood as the dominant ingredient in most dishes. Many are a blend of Asian cuisine such as Vietnamese flavors infused in Southern cuisine. You will find here Vietnamese po’boy, curried coconut chicken, pulled pork or ribs in smokehouses where barbequed dishes are popular. You can also try varieties of crawfish dishes here, along with other crustaceans where these are served with piles of potato and corn. You can also get to try varieties of bread pudding as a dessert here, some that are topped with rum as well.
